Since I was first coming up with the main riff, I intended to create a serene image in the song and I completed the introduction to suit an image of a milky way. Later, I organised the overall instrumentation and harmony to be reminiscent of stars and their lights.
My start of the production was the main riff heard from the very first bar, and then I proceeded smoothly by adding chords, another repeating riff, bass and drumset. Right after that, I struggled with structuring the song, on how to continue into the next sections, which I chose to repeat the first part with some variation in instrumentation--adding strings. I also struggled with making the chorus part sound fuller; I always felt like it lacked some highlight and sounded weaker compared to the reverse cymbals I used for the transition. I overcame it by getting feedback from my friend and teacher, by putting more contrast in volume between the two sections and doubling the main riff. I also made the chords sound slightly louder.
I’m the most pleased about the outro, where I made it modulate twice for a highlighting ending. The overall sound also sounds good and fulfilled my expectations when I started this piece and it kept the serene image I wanted.
There are so many aspects I like about songs that I listen to, and I realised I cannot recreate all of them in my own piece. For example, I realised that this composition ended up as a slower and chill type of song, when I also like to listen to upbeat and funky songs.
