The main melody I first came up with straight away reminded me of my old friends and primary school. So I organised the piece with an upbeat rhythm with simple instrumentation and lyrical melody to be reminiscent of childhood.
At first, this was a very simple piece with a piano melody and guitar chords played in arpeggio and sounded much more dull and basic compared to now, although it still had nostalgic emotion. In the second phase, I decided to make it a piano piece and changed the chords to be played in a syncopated upbeat rhythm to create a more unique emotion throughout the song: happy but nostalgic and even sad to be a better reflection of the childhood that we can never go back. I added the glockenspiel for a more child-like representation.
I’m pleased about how the piano and glockenspiel combine and create the children’s-song-like feeling that I wanted. I also like the nostalgic main melody and its harmony with the chord and accompanying glockenspiel.
This is a type of song that I would never listen to in my free time, but I actually enjoyed the process of making it and creating the feeling I wanted. It was also my first time creating something that relates to me personally.
