This s a zazz composition, and I used the AABA structure which is fairly common for Jazz music.
I started off with a simple drum beat. I then added some more percussion in order to increase complexity. After that, I came up with a progression of chords and put them into a consistent rhythm that would fit over the drums. In order to make the structure more complex, I also made another chord progression but in the relative minor. I decided to also add a drum solo, since that is also fairly common in Jazz. After that, I added the bass line. Last but not least, the alto saxophone was used for the melody. The drums were fairly easy to make, but the chord progressions took quite a while. However, once I finished with the chord progressions, everything came quite naturally - at that point, I had enough to work off of so that I could practically improvise over some parts of it (Considering that it was intended to be a Jazz piece, that was quite appropriate).
I am particularly pleased with the chord progression. Once I was able to make a chord progression that I genuinely liked, the rest of the music became quite easy to make.
I learned that I need to train my ears better for music - I was constantly looking at individual notes to figure out much of what I was trying to make, and I feel that the process could have been far more easy if I was able to recognise intervals and chords more easily by ear.
