Leo writes:
I tried making music in the style of β€œBoom Bap” hip-hop, which involves sampling preexisting music - specifically jazz. Since that was what I was trying to imitate, it was what I named the track.
First, I took the Soundtrap project of my Jazz composition. Then, I sped up the tempo as well as pitched down the piece as a whole. After that, I removed the original drums and replaced them with a more simple pattern that put emphasis on the kick and snare drums. After that, I divided the parts of the original piece left into small bits of one bar each. I then rearranged these into 4 distinct 4-bar melodies, one for each section.
I am pleased with how it sounds compared to the original Jazz piece - with my sampling, I was able to make it sound different enough to avoid making it seem as if I directly copied it into the instrumental but also similar enough that the jazzy mood of the original was not completely lost.
Sampling isn’t easy as it seems - making something catchy that’s different enough from the original material to not come off as plagiarism but similar enough to retain parts of the appeal of the original is quite a difficult process
